Random Object Generator Wheel: Spin for One, Two or Three Objects

Pick a list, press Spin and get an everyday object to draw, act out or write about. Ask for two or three at once, or hide the result for a guessing game.

This random object generator wheel gives you an everyday object each time you press Spin: a teapot, a ladder, a hiking boot. Choose one, two or three objects per spin, pick one of eight lists, and hide the result when the object should stay secret until a player is ready to draw or act it out.

The wheel opens with a Starter 24 list of 24 objects, such as an umbrella, a kite and a typewriter. Its eight lists hold 332 objects in total, from an alarm clock to a xylophone, and you can type in your own.

How to use the random object generator wheel

  1. Press Spin. You can also click the wheel or press Space. The wheel opens with Starter 24, so you can spin at once.
  2. Pick a list. In the Entries tab, under Object lists, choose Starter 24, All objects or one of the eight lists. The number at the top right of that block shows how many objects are on the wheel.
  3. Choose Objects per spin. The 1 object, 2 objects and 3 objects buttons sit above the tabs.
  4. Read the card. It says Your object, or Your objects when you asked for two or three, with each name in large type. Spin again gives a new result.

On a phone, the lists, the display choice and Objects per spin sit under the wheel. The tick list and the Mystery options are in the Entries sheet, which opens from the bar at the bottom of the screen.

The Object lists block of the random object generator wheel: the buttons Starter 24, All objects, Around the house, Kitchen, Tools and garden, Clothes and bags, School and office, Toys and games, Sport and outdoors and Music and crafts with Kitchen selected and 36 objects, the Show on the wheel choice Emoji + name and Name only, a Find an object search box, a list of kitchen objects with Baby bottle unticked and 36 of 37 ticked, and the Mystery wheel and Mystery result buttons.

The eight lists of objects

Each list holds one kind of object. Starter 24 is the opening wheel of 24 objects taken from these lists, and All objects puts all 332 on the wheel.

Around the house54Alarm clock, Bathtub, Key
Kitchen37Teapot, Whisk, Colander
Tools and garden36Hammer, Wheelbarrow, Ladder
Clothes and bags41Sun hat, Raincoat, Backpack
School and office49Typewriter, Stapler, Abacus
Toys and games36Kite, Yo-yo, Snow globe
Sport and outdoors45Canoe, Tent, Compass
Music and crafts34Banjo, Sewing machine, Easel

Choose the list by where you will play. Around the house and Kitchen tend to hold objects that most players can name without help, which suits a mixed group. Tools and garden and Music and crafts hold objects with more parts, such as a wheelbarrow or a sewing machine, which gives a drawing more to work with. Toys and games and Sport and outdoors hold many objects that are easy to mime, such as a hula hoop or a fishing rod.

Click one list to narrow the wheel to it, then click more lists to add them: Kitchen plus Tools and garden puts 73 objects on the wheel. All 332 at once make a crowded wheel, and the panel warns that more than 60 slices are hard to read. Pick one or two lists when you want the wheel itself to be readable.

Show on the wheel switches between Emoji + name and Name only. Name only leaves the pictures off the slices and the result card.

Spin for two or three objects at once

Set Objects per spin to 2 objects or 3 objects and each spin gives that many different objects. The wheel stops on one slice, and the card adds the others from the same list, so the same object never appears twice in one result.

A result such as a boxing glove, a chair and a hiking boot is a ready-made brief: draw all three in one scene, or write a short story in which each one matters. One object gives you a subject; three give you a situation.

With 3 objects per spin, the card lists three different objects.

If fewer objects are on the wheel than you ask for, you get as many as there are. With two objects ticked and 3 objects chosen, a spin gives those two.

Hide the object for a guessing game

Two buttons under Options in the Entries tab keep the object secret:

  • Mystery wheel replaces the name on every slice with a ?, so nobody can read the object off the wheel.
  • Mystery result shows a ? on the card instead of the object, with a Reveal answer button.

Turn on both for a drawing or acting game. The player who will draw or act spins and presses Reveal answer while the others look away, then plays the round. The next player spins again.

With Mystery result on, the card shows a ? until someone presses Reveal answer.

Take objects off the wheel, or add your own

Under Objects, every object in the chosen list has a checkbox. Untick an object and it leaves the wheel. The count at the top of the block and the ticked count under the search box update at once. Find an object filters the list, and Tick all and Untick all act only on the objects the search shows. Type "bottle", for example, and Untick all removes the Baby bottle, the Bottle opener and the Water bottle in one click.

To add objects of your own, type them into Add an object or write one per line in Bulk edit. The wheel holds up to 1,000 entries.

Ticking an object or choosing a list rebuilds the wheel from the lists, and that drops objects you typed by hand. Choose the list and the ticks first, and add your own objects last.

Ways to use the wheel

  • Twenty questions. The player who presses Reveal answer sees the object, and everyone else asks yes-or-no questions until someone names it.
  • A vocabulary round. Choose one list, such as Kitchen. A learner spins, then describes the object in the language being learned (its shape, what it is made of, what it is for) until the others name it.
  • A scavenger hunt at home. Choose Around the house or Kitchen and untick what nobody can carry, such as the Bathtub, the Door and the Couch. Spin 2 objects and let each player race to bring both.
  • An invention round. Spin 2 objects and ask each player to design a gadget that combines them. For timed rounds, use the timer on your phone.
  • An improv prop. Spin one object and make every scene use it as something else, such as a ladder as a bridge.

What this wheel does not do

  • It shows a name and, for 201 of the 332 objects, a small picture. It has no photos and no descriptions.
  • It has no difficulty setting. The lists are sorted by kind of object, not by how hard an object is to draw or act out.
  • It gives at most three objects per spin.
  • It has no timer.
  • In Elimination mode (Mode in the Spin tab), one object leaves the wheel per spin, even when the card shows two or three.
  • It forgets on reload. The wheel goes back to Starter 24 with 1 object per spin, and objects you typed are gone.

More wheels for games and drawing

For a drawing prompt with a style, a timer and a sketch pad, use the What to Draw Wheel. For animals instead of objects, the Random Animal Generator can narrow its list to a group such as birds or reptiles. To pick who draws or acts next, use the Random Name Picker, and to split a group into teams, the Random Team Generator. Any other list goes on the Spin the Wheel page.
