Random NBA Team Generator: NBA Picker Wheel for a Team or a Matchup
Choose all 30 teams, a conference or a division, then press Spin. Draw one team, a home and away matchup or three teams.
This random NBA team generator is a spinning wheel with all 30 NBA teams on it. Press Spin and it picks one team at random. You can first narrow the wheel to the East, the West or one of the six divisions, or ask for a home and away matchup or three teams in one spin.
Use it as an NBA picker wheel whenever a team has to be chosen by chance: the team to play as in a basketball video game, the team a friend must root for, the two teams of a pretend game. Each slice shows a team's nickname and a three-letter badge, and the result card adds the full name, home city, conference and division. It picks teams, not players, and only the 30 teams in the NBA today. The section on players, all-time teams and decades, further down, says what to do for those.
How to use the random NBA team generator
- Press Spin. You can also click the wheel or press Space. The wheel opens with all 30 teams on it.
- Choose the teams. In the Entries tab, under Team groups, pick All 30, East 15, West 15 or one division. The number at the top right of that block shows how many teams are on the wheel.
- Choose Teams per spin. 1 team, Matchup and 3 teams sit above the tabs on a computer and under the wheel on a phone.
- Read the card. For one team it shows a badge with the team's code, the full name, the home city, the conference and the division. Spin again gives a new result.
On a phone, the team groups, Show on the wheel and Teams per spin sit under the wheel. The team list and the Mystery buttons are in the Entries sheet, which opens from the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Pick a random team from the East, the West or one division
The Team groups chips decide which teams are on the wheel. East 15 puts the 15 Eastern Conference teams on it, and West 15 puts the 15 Western Conference teams on it. Each conference has three divisions of five teams, and a division chip puts only those five on the wheel.
| Chip | Teams on the wheel |
|---|---|
| All 30 | Every team. This is the opening setting. |
| East 15 | The 15 Eastern Conference teams: the Atlantic, Central and Southeast divisions. |
| West 15 | The 15 Western Conference teams: the Northwest, Pacific and Southwest divisions. |
| Atlantic | Celtics, Nets, Knicks, 76ers, Raptors |
| Central | Bulls, Cavaliers, Pistons, Pacers, Bucks |
| Southeast | Hawks, Hornets, Heat, Magic, Wizards |
| Northwest | Nuggets, Timberwolves, Thunder, Trail Blazers, Jazz |
| Pacific | Warriors, Clippers, Lakers, Suns, Kings |
| Southwest | Mavericks, Rockets, Grizzlies, Pelicans, Spurs |
The first tap on a chip narrows the wheel to that group. After that, each tap adds a group or takes it off again: Pacific and then Atlantic gives 10 teams. The last group cannot be switched off, so the wheel is never empty. A dot on each conference and division chip, and the color of each badge, show the conference: indigo for the East and rose for the West.

Draw one team, a matchup or three teams
Teams per spin sets how many teams one spin gives. The teams in one result are always different from each other.
- 1 team is the opening setting. The card shows the badge, the full name, the home city, the conference and the division.
- Matchup draws two teams. The first is marked Home and the second Away, so the card reads like a game: the Houston Rockets at home against the Milwaukee Bucks. Both teams can come from the same conference or from different ones, depending on which groups are on the wheel.
- 3 teams draws three teams, listed in the order they were drawn, each with its home city and conference.
The wheel itself stops on one slice, the first team. The other one or two come from the teams still on the wheel, without a second spin.

What the NBA picker wheel shows for each team
Each slice carries the team's nickname, such as Celtics, and a badge with its usual three-letter code, such as BOS. The result card spells out the full name, Boston Celtics. Show on the wheel changes what the slices carry:
- Both shows the badge and the nickname. This is the opening setting.
- Names shows the nicknames only.
- Codes shows the badges only, with no names.
Two buttons under Options hide the answer. Mystery wheel replaces the text on every slice with a ?. Mystery result shows a ? on the card instead of the team, with a Reveal answer button. For a guessing round, choose Codes and Mystery result: the slices show only badges, and the group can guess the team from its code before you press Reveal answer.
Leave teams out of the spin
The Teams list in the Entries tab has a checkbox for every team on the wheel. Untick a team and it leaves the wheel, and the count updates at once, for example 27 of 30 ticked. Find a team filters the list by name, three-letter code, home city, state or division. Tick all and Untick all act only on the teams the search shows. Type "texas" and press Untick all, and the Mavericks, Rockets and Spurs can no longer come up.

Need a random NBA player, an all-time team or a decade?
This wheel does not have them. It holds the 30 NBA teams of today, with no players, no teams that have moved or closed and no decade setting. You can still put your own list on it:
- A random NBA player wheel. In the Entries tab, press Bulk edit, paste one player name per line and press Apply list. The wheel then holds only those names. The result card still says "Your team", so a list of players is better suited to the Random Name Picker.
- An all-time team list. Type a team that no longer exists, such as Seattle SuperSonics, into the Add a team box and press Enter, or paste a list with Bulk edit. Typed names go on the wheel as plain text, and the card shows the name as you typed it, without a badge, home city, conference or division.
- A team and a decade. There is no decade setting. Spin a team here, then spin a second wheel with decades typed in, such as 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, on Spin the Wheel. Together the two spins give a pair such as Chicago Bulls and 1990s.
Anything you type or paste is dropped when you change the groups or a tick, because the wheel is rebuilt from the 30 teams. Add your own entries last.
Ways to use a random NBA team
- A team to play as. When nobody can agree on a team in a basketball video game, spin and take the result. Matchup gives both sides, with the first team at home.
- A team for each friend. Spin with 1 team, hand over the result, press Remove winner on the card and spin again, until everyone has one. Leave the groups and ticks alone in between, because a change puts the removed teams back on the wheel.
- A team to follow. Spin once and follow that team's games for a week.
- A guessing round. Set Codes and Mystery result, spin, and let the group name the team from its badge before you press Reveal answer.
- A geography warm-up. The card gives the home city and the state or province, so a class can find each team on a map, for example Toronto, Ontario.
What this wheel does not do
- It picks teams, not players. There are no rosters, lineups or player stats.
- It holds the 30 NBA teams of today only. Teams that have moved, been renamed or closed are not on it, and there is no decade setting.
- It has no standings, scores, records or schedules, so it cannot tell you which teams are good this season.
- It uses no team logos. The slices carry three-letter badges, and ShuffleWheel is not affiliated with the NBA. Team names are used only to name the teams.
- It does not split people into teams. For that, use the Random Team Generator.
- Remove winner appears only on one-team results. It takes the team off the wheel, but the Teams list still shows it ticked, and changing the groups or a tick puts it back.
- It needs at least two teams on the wheel. With one team ticked, the page says "Add at least 2 items to spin the wheel."
- It forgets your choices when you reload. The wheel goes back to All 30, Both and 1 team, with every team ticked.
